Job Description

Our client, a major player in the clean energy sector, is seeking a Software Systems Engineer to manage, maintain, and further develop their suite of renewable energy data collection and reporting systems. This is a hands-on technical role with meaningful impact - supporting the UK’s clean energy transition through robust data and operational efficiency, all from the comfort of your home in South Africa.

About the Systems

You’ll take ownership of three in-house systems that continuously collect, monitor, and report on data from renewable energy sites across the UK, identifying faults and ensuring optimal performance:

  • Solar Rooftop and Ground Mount O&M System
  • Wind Turbine O&M System
  • Stingray – Meter Reading Collection System (Head End)

The O&M systems are LAMP-based servers hosted on AWS, while Stingray is a newer Python-based platform using Flask and modern API integrations.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Ensure all systems are stable and available 24/7.
  • Manage backups and restore processes.
  • Oversee continuous data collection and performance monitoring across renewable sites.
  • Provide technical support to internal and external users.
  • Enhance reporting tools and generate high-quality management and operational reports.
  • Plan and implement upgrades to improve scalability, performance, and efficiency.

What We’re Looking For

Essential Technical Skills:

  • Strong Linux experience (LAMP stack) hosted on AWS
  • Apache Server configuration and maintenance
  • CRON, email, and FTP management
  • PHP and JavaScript development
  • MySQL/MariaDB administration, data analysis, and database design
  • Basic Python

Desirable Skills:

  • C programming and advanced Python
  • Experience with CMS (WordPress) – both frontend and backend
  • Understanding of Flask/Gunicorn/Nginx and API-based architectures

About You

You’re organised, proactive, and a problem-solver who thrives on diagnosing complex issues and improving systems. You work independently but are happy to collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure system reliability and data accuracy.

What You’ll Get

  • Competitive salary - (depending on experience)
  • Opportunity to directly contribute to the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure
  • Work remotely in a fast-growing, sustainable sector
  • Supportive, collaborative team environment
