Are you strict on yourself? That’s a reason you are giving-up on your dreams (new research)

People give up their dreams because they have been too hard on themselves.

This blog presents to you a research finding that shows how kindness and compassion makes people work towards their dreams.

What being hard on yourself looks like?

  • You schedule tough routine for yourself. The routine makes you exhaustive and there’s hardly any energy left for things that can come outside your schedule.
  • Your work life balance is compromised because you are too focused on the work.
  • You feel tensed with the thought of starting your work.
  • When you fail to function as per your expectations, you are highly demotivated and criticize yourself for seeing the loss.

So, what should you do instead?

Treat yourself with kindness. Don’t take the hard approach of tough schedules and self-criticism.

Research from University of California shows that when you show self-compassion, you are more motivated to work.

Strict discipline and self-criticism, on the other hand, stop you from moving forward and kill your motivation. And so the chances of you giving up are very high.

But doesn’t strict self-discipline allow better learning?

At the surface, strict self-discipline, and unending hard work seems the best approach towards achieving anything.

However, research shows that people who treat themselves with tight schedules and unforgiving remarks are more likely to procrastinate.

This is because they experience a level of stress when they force themselves to fulfill expectations. The stress reduces their ability to passionately approach their dream and forces them to halt.

Now what does kindness look like?

dreams

  1. Accepting your weakness and assuring yourself that it’s ok to make mistakes.
  2. Allowing yourself to perform outside your expectations. Bringing more ease for yourself rather than sticking to your schedule means you are being kind to yourself.
  3. Hope for a better performance next time. Think positive thoughts about your potential for success.
  4. Give yourself breaks. It’s ok to take out some time to relieve yourself of work stress. Take a break to return more fresh.

Take away!

Being able to have a dream is a great blessing. Not everyone finds their passion in life.

So if you feel passionate about something, it means that the universe has chosen you for that thing.

That’s why it’s really important to adopt a kindness approach that elevates your motivation and powers you to pursue your dream.
